Our mental health is very important and we can all be guilty of letting our busy lives take over and not setting aside time for our mental well-being. We have all read so many ways to help our mental health but I want to talk about some more unusual ways to help boost our mental health and also maybe find a new hobby at the same time. As we get older we are all guilty of not wanting to try new things and getting stuck in a bit of a rut but why do we do this. Why can’t we take up a new hobby and find a little extra joy in our lives? You might just find a new passion and there is no better way to get those happy hormones flowing and make mental health a bigger part of your life.

1. Mountain Biking
Ready to feel the wind in your hair and the thrill of adventure? Say hello to mountain biking! There is no better feeling than grabbing your bike and hitting the mountain bike trails. Being in the mountains is one of the best feelings in the world. There is something so freeing about being in the middle of the mountain just you, your bike, and the elements. It is perfect for clearing your mind and returning to the present moment. Plus, it’s a fantastic workout. So strap on your helmet, grab your bike and let the fun begin.
2. Rock Climbing
Get ready to climb to new heights, literally! Sorry, I couldn’t help the pun there. Rock climbing isn’t just a sport. it’s a confidence-boosting, fear-conquering adventure. It is not for the faint of heart as you will be tacking heights. With each ascent, you will challenge yourself, problem-solve and soak in the breathtaking views. Your mind will be so focused on the route at hand that it can’t wander on to other matters this can be a really good way to clear an overthinking mind. With every new route you conquer you will have a great sense of achievement too. It is also really good if you are struggling with insomnia, as your body and mind will be tired after such a physical task.
3. Quilting
Let your creativity shine with the cosy, bright and colourful world of quilting! Grab some fabric, thread, and your imagination and let the stitching begin. Quilting isn’t just about making blankets, it’s about creating beautiful memories stitch by stitch. This is a great hobby if being active is not your thing. Put your mind to work on intricate patterns and feel the accomplishment of finishing your first project. quilting is complex and takes time and practice to really get each pattern right. Calm your busy mind with patterns and you get a bonus of a new quilt at the end of each project.
4. Beach Combing
Why not escape to the beach for a relaxing treasure hunt adventure? With each step along the shore, you’ll uncover treasures from seashells, driftwood, and maybe even a message in a bottle. Places like the beach and rivers have natural relaxation powers and can help you destress and refocus. Let the sound of the waves crashing on the shores and the sand between your toes bring you back to the present and help you find balance. The beach is a wonderful treasure trove of possibilities. Start a collection of your findings, and why not turn them into something? Like a beautiful driftwood lamp or a sea glass photo frame, or keep them so you can admire them in the future.
5. Wildlife Photography
There is beauty everywhere and nowhere more beautiful than the great outdoors so grab your trusty camera and get outside! Whether you’re snapping photos of birds in flight or deer in the mountains, wildlife photography is a feast for the senses. Being at one with nature is always a good place to be when you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Losing yourself to the beauty of this world is a great leveller to remind you there is beauty in the world even in dark times. By focusing on getting that perfect shot of a roaming stag or a sea eagle chick taking flight for the first time, the possibilities are endless, and there is always something to go and shoot.
There are so many ways to boost our mental health it doesn’t always have to be what everyone commonly thinks about when we talk about taking time for our mental health. Everyone’s mental health journey is individual and unique, just like ours. So try a new hobby and see if it helps boost and improve your mental well-being.
