Kent is a treasure trove of family-friendly activities just waiting to be explored. As a mother of 2 young children, I love finding new places to keep them entertained. Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor, here are some must-visit destinations and activities for a memorable family day out in Kent.

Explore Historic Castles
Kent is home to some of England’s most iconic castles, including Dover Castle, Leeds Castle, and Hever Castle. These ancient fortresses provide the perfect backdrop for children to immerse themselves in history through interactive exhibits, medieval re-enactments, and exciting events. Leeds Castle is a personal favourite of mine because it’s practically on my doorstep. The kids love the play areas and the maze, even though we’ve been through it so often we know the way to the middle as well as we know the way to our own kitchen!
Adventures in Nature
Kent is known as the Garden of England for a reason! It’s full of beautiful countryside and coastal areas ideal for outdoor adventures. Take a family hike along the White Cliffs of Dover or explore the enchanting woodlands of Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest. Bedgebury is especially beautiful to visit in the run up to Christmas, as they have beautiful light displays that the kids love to explore! Alternatively, nature reserves like RSPB Dungeness offer birdwatching opportunities and wildlife encounters that will captivate young minds.
Family-Friendly Museums
Kent is home to a variety of museums catering to different interests. The Canterbury Tales offers a journey back in time to medieval England, while the Kent Life Heritage Farm Park provides hands-on experiences with farm animals and rural life, which are great for kids! There’s also a delightful tractor ride around the park that kids love!
Beach Days
With its extensive coastline, Kent boasts some of the finest beaches in the UK. From sandy shores like Botany Bay to charming seaside towns like Broadstairs and Whitstable, there’s no shortage of coastal gems to explore. Build sandcastles, paddle in the sea, or enjoy traditional fish and chips by the shore for a quintessential British seaside experience.

Animal Encounters
Treat your little ones to a day of animal encounters at wildlife parks and zoos in Kent. Port Lympne Reserve and Howletts Wild Animal Park are home to a diverse array of exotic animals, including big cats, primates, and elephants. For a more hands-on experience, visit the Rare Breeds Centre in Ashford, where children can interact with farm animals and learn about conservation. Our personal favourite is Wingham Wildlife Park. If your kids like dinosaurs, you should definitely check out Wingham!
Steam Train Rides
All aboard! Embark on a magical journey aboard a heritage steam train through Kent’s picturesque countryside. The Kent & East Sussex Railway offers scenic rides from Tenterden to Bodiam Castle, while the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway provides a unique opportunity to explore the coast by miniature steam train.
Adventure Parks
For a day filled with thrills and excitement, visit one of Kent’s adventure parks. Diggerland offers the ultimate construction-themed adventure with rides and attractions centred around real diggers and heavy machinery. Kids LOVE controlling heavy machinery! At least, mine do. Meanwhile, Kent’s larger theme parks like Dreamland Margate provide a wide range of rides, shows, and activities for all ages.
Or, for a different kind of adventure, you could explore towns and villages like Faversham, with their beautiful creeks and harbours, perfect for kids who like the water and boats.
